What is the State’s biggest investment in AI for?

By acting as "anchor client" for the future gigafactory, the State is reserving capacity that it will have to know how to use. But the access criteria and how the return will be measured are yet to be defined.

The Government has committed up to 200 million euros to buy computing capacity at the future artificial intelligence (AI) gigafactory. It is the Portuguese State’s largest financial commitment to this kind of technology. But it matters who will use that capacity, on what terms and to what ends.

Almost eight months behind the original timetable, the European Commission launched, on 30 July, the call to set up as many as seven AI gigafactories in the European Union. Brussels hopes to mobilise at least 20 billion euros of private investment and up to ten billion euros of national and European funds.
