AI is one of the most promising areas of technology and it is essential that we are aware of that. Rules on a European scale are a good way of setting limits on what can and cannot be done with it.
About a year ago, in this very column, I wrote about the case of Robert Julian-Borchak Williams. An African-American citizen who was detained, jailed and wrongly accused by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm.
It was in January 2020. The police stopped Williams outside his home, handcuffed him in front of his wife and children, took him to the station and made him spend the night in jail.
